State of the Market Report for Healthcare Facility Electrification
Healthcare electrification improves health outcomes, enables reliable delivery of essential health services and supports the transition to clean energy. Yet significant gaps remain in access to reliable electricity for healthcare facilities worldwide.
Building on the 2024 edition, the State of the Market Report for Healthcare Facility Electrification: 2026 Update, developed by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), assesses the current state of the sector and charts a path towards sustainable growth.
Drawing on SEforALL’s Powering Healthcare Intervention Heatmap and Database, stakeholder interviews and sector analysis, the report offers an in-depth look at:
- Current healthcare electrification trends and progress
- Key challenges to scaling up reliable electricity access
- Financing and investment needs, including opportunities for service-based models
- The sector’s outlook and recommendations to accelerate progress on powering healthcare facilities
The updated database maps 426 initiatives across 73 countries. The report finds that at least 286,170 healthcare facilities worldwide will still require first-time electrification or reliable backup power, with an estimated USD 2.67 billion in upfront investment needed to close the remaining gap in Sub-Saharan Africa alone.
By providing a uniquely comprehensive, bottom-up picture of healthcare electrification initiatives worldwide, the report offers an evidence base to track progress, identify remaining gaps and inform investment and action across the sector.
