The Sustainable Energy for All Forum returns in 100 days

News

The Sustainable Energy for All Forum, the landmark event celebrating the global sustainable energy movement, kicks off in 100 days on May 2-3 in Lisbon, Portugal. Register here.

More than 750 leaders from government, business, civil society and international organizations are expected to attend this year’s Forum under the theme “Leaving No One Behind.” It comes at a critical juncture for accelerating progress on global sustainable energy goals, under Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) and the Paris Climate Agreement.

Hosted by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), the two-day event will focus on showcasing leadership, interrogating failure and identifying what’s needed to drive faster, broader progress towards clean, affordable energy for all by 2030. The Forum occurs just a few months in advance of the UN High-Level Political Forum’s key formal review on progress – or lack of – on SDG7 and other SDG goals.

“A significant number of people worldwide are still missing out on education, health, jobs and broader economic opportunities because they don’t have access to clean, affordable energy,” said Rachel Kyte, CEO and Special Representative to the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All. “Closing these energy gaps – especially for vulnerable ‘last mile populations’ – is the forum’s imperative.”

Like last year’s event, which featured delegates from more than 100 countries, the 2018 Forum will be a marketplace for brokering new partnerships, spurring investment and driving large-scale action towards closing the energy access gap globally.

The action-packed agenda will focus on the latest data and evidence of what’s working to speed and scale electricity access, renewable energy and energy productivity in all corners of the world.

Clean cooking fuels, off-grid renewables, clean transportation and access to safe, affordable cooling are among the many key SDG7 issues that will be will discussed in high-level plenaries. The Forum will also feature wide-ranging sessions such as reaching the displaced and refugees with sustainable energy and leveraging people-centered approaches that promote gender equality.

One key highlight will be the launch of the 2018 Global Tracking Framework report, which benchmarks annual progress towards achieving universal access to modern energy services, doubling renewable energy and improving energy efficiency by 2030.

Partners from across the globe will also be sharing their stories of success, including organizations working on SEforALL Accelerators like the People-Centered Accelerator and others focused on industry, business and efficiency.

This year’s Forum will take place at Convento do Beato, located in the historic part of Lisbon. With its recognition as a leading city for sustainability and innovation, its affordability and its easy access from all continents, Lisbon provides an ideal location.
