A Practical Guide to eCooking Appliances in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Knowledge brief
eCooking Appliances report

A practical guide for programme planners, procurement teams and policymakers navigating the rapidly evolving market of electric cooking (eCooking) appliances. Developed jointly by SEforALL and Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS), this report categorizes the appliances available across low- and middle-income countries — from hotplates and induction cookers to electric pressure cookers, multicookers and air fryers. Each is assessed against the characteristics that matter most: energy efficiency, cooking performance, safety, cost, durability and cultural fit. It offers stakeholders a structured way to choose appliances suited to local diets, infrastructure and household needs and supports the broader transition to clean, sustainable cooking under SDG 7.
