Botswana National Renewable Energy Power Sector Plan

The Botswana National Renewable Energy Power Sector Plan sets out how Botswana can expand domestic electricity supply to 2050 while strengthening energy security and supporting economic diversification. Coal currently generates around 97% of the country's domestic electricity.

Developed by SEforALL with the Ministry of Minerals and Energy of Botswana, the Plan identifies the generation, storage and grid investment needed, alongside the electrification of transport, mining, industry and household cooking that will drive future demand. Under the more ambitious pathway, solar PV would account for around three-quarters of installed generation capacity by 2050, and oil consumption would fall by nearly half, saving around USD 5.7 billion in fuel and trade costs.
