Vienna, 11 July 2014 - Today SRSG Kandeh K. Yumkella, UN Secretary-General Special Representative and CEO of Sustainable Energy for All, met with Ms Clare Short, former UK Secretary of State for International Development from 1997 to 2003, to discuss the governance structure of EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative) and the benefits of multi-stakeholder platforms in the light of the ongoing work on the long term institutional arrangement of SEforALL. Ms Clare Short currently holds the chairmanship of EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative), a non-profit association under Norwegian law, which established an international standard for openness around the management of revenues from natural resources. Governments sign-up to implement the EITI Standard and must meet certain requirements and disclose how much they receive from extractive companies operating in their country and these companies disclose how much they pay. Furthermore Ms Clare Short has been a member of the Advocacy Panel of Cities Alliance since 2006. The Cities Alliance is an alliance of the World Bank, UN-HABITAT, local government and development partners committed to meeting the UN target to develop cities without slums while dealing with the ever increasing demands of urbanization, particularly in Africa. She is a member of the Advisory Committee of International Lawyers for Africa and a Trustee of Africa Humanitarian Action.
